Halemaumau from Mauna Kea

This time-lapse telephoto shot shows the glow of the lava flow in Halemaumau crater about 30 miles away. What look like flames are actually just the smoke and steam of the eruption illuminated by the glow of the lava pool inside the crater.

The glow to the left is probably due to sodium street lights from the little town of Volcano, located just outside the Volcano National Park boundary.
