Comet ISON Perihelion - 28 Nov. 2013

Comet ISON Perihelion

[28 Nov. 2013] Comet C/2012 S1 (ISON) Perihelion
NASA / ESA Solar & Heliospheric Observatory

Although initially thought to be completely destroyed, SOHO probe images show that at least some part of Comet ISON survived its close encounter with the sun and continued to emit dust as a comet would be expected to do. In the animated sequence above, the sun's position and size is shown by an open circle. The dark area including the sun is blocked from view to prevent the camera from being overloaded by the brightness of the sun.

Note: I've created my own copy (in GIF format) of the animation on the NASA SOHO site because it has been difficult to get the javascript animation to run smoothly on the NASA site due to the heavy interest in Comet ISON's fate.
