Supernova Remnant S-147

Astrophotos | Home Page

Simeis 147, straddling the Auriga-Taurus border, is a very old supernova remnant that has expanded so much that it is barely visible. This image (a full 6x7 frame) has been greatly contrast enhanced to bring out the thin red tendrils of the nebula to the point where they are obvious. The diameter of the nebula is about 3-1/2 degrees, or about 7 times the size of the Moon.

The big blue halo around the nearby star is due to the hazy sky condition. Open cluster M37 is at the upper left of the frame.
