Milky Way from the House of the Sun

Astrophotos | Home Page

Being able to see further south than most places in the U.S. is one of the attractions of observing from Hawaii. This is a wide angle shot of the "summer" Milky Way as seen from about 10,000 feet on Mt. Haleakala (House of the Sun) on the island of Maui. The area south of the Scorpion's tail is not visible from many places in the U.S.

The blurred dark area at lower left in the photo is the horizon. The camera was aligned north-south for the shot which caused the horizon to tilt for this early morning shot.
