IC4628 in the Tail of Scorpius

Visually, we see this area as a brilliant spray of stars in a telescope or binoculars, but in a deep photo, so many stars become visible that the region is unrecognizable. This area is in the tail of Scorpius at the point where it curves sharply to the east to form the coiled tail of the scorpion. The bright red area of nebulosity near the center of the frame is IC4628 and the tight cluster of stars below it is NGC6231.
